About this product

What is Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Feline Hydrolyzed Protein HP Dry Cat Food?

Whether a veterinarian has determined through an elimination diet trial that your cat has food sensitivities or they require long-term support for her skin and GI issues, your vet recommended Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein Adult HP for a reason. This highly palatable diet is designed for adult cats.

This veterinary exclusive formula requires a prescription. Consult your veterinarian for more information about this product for your pet.

Suitable for:

Cats (Adult Cats with Food Sensitivities)

Benefits:

  • CATS WITH FOOD SENSITIVITIES: Veterinary-exclusive dry cat food made with hydrolyzed protein for adult cats with food sensitivities
  • SKIN & GI SUPPORT: Helps reduce GI and skin reactions that may be a result of sensitivities to common proteins found in pet foods
  • MINIMIZES RISK OF REACTIONS: Proteins are broken down to a size that’s less likely to be recognized by the immune system
  • SKIN CARE: Essential nutrients reinforce the skin barrier and support healthy skin in cats with skin sensitivity and irritation
  • HEALTHY DIGESTION: Exclusive blend of fibers and prebiotics promotes digestive health

How does Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Feline Hydrolyzed Protein HP Dry Cat Food work?

ALLERGY TESTING INTEGRATION: If your cat has been diagnosed with food allergies or sensitivities, consider integrating Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Feline Hydrolyzed Protein HP Dry Cat Food into an elimination diet plan. This food contains hydrolyzed proteins, which have been broken down into smaller components that are less likely to trigger an allergic reaction. By exclusively feeding your cat this hypoallergenic diet for a period of time, typically around 8-12 weeks, you can effectively identify and confirm specific food allergens. This process can help pinpoint the exact ingredients that your cat is allergic to, allowing you to tailor their diet accordingly and avoid future allergic reactions. It's an important step in managing your cat's health and ensuring their long-term well-being.

Used to give my cat another brand of hydrolized protein food for her allergies. She has been allergic to every protein I’ve tried. Her allergies were well controlled on the other food but she stopped eating it. I switched to this one but her allergies do not seem well controlled.

Changes to formula
My cat just started to eat this for suspected food allergies/sensitivities. She really likes it; I'm not yet sure if it is going to help her diarrhea!! I've read so many concerns about the changes in the formula. So my question and concern is, why hasn't Royal Canin addressed how they have changed the formula? Pet owners are entitled to know that information. It should be posted in the answers to people's concerns, so those of us reading the reviews will know too! Where can that info be found?

Very, very unhappy. We've been buying this product for over a year, and it did a great job controlling lesions on my cats belly. The formula must have changed because she now has lesions again, and we noticed she ate a lot more of it than usual. I see similar complaints about the dog food. We are actively searching for a different brand, as this is heartbreaking.

great, if your cat will even eat it.
pros: within 2 weeks, my cat's skin issues and vomiting problems that she's had for YEARS completely resolved. cons: she absolutely loathes this food and won't eat more than a few bites at mealtimes. she started dropping weight immediately and increasingly just refuses to even acknowledge that it's food unless i'm standing directly over her as she eats. 1/4 of the way through the bag and i'm already needing to try another brand of food because -- crazy enough -- cats do need to actually eat food to survive, and they *will not* eat this.

Forever greatful!
My girly had the worst skin and ear issues. She was in and out of the vet with ear infections, scratching herself till she bled. I started her on this food and a couple weeks later she was feeling better, more comfortable and her ear infection went away and stayed away! I’m so glad I made the switch. It’s truly amazing how much we can change our kitties lives just by changing their food!

Formula change
My cat has been on this same food for over 10 years. I notice when I opened the latest bag of the HP food, the color and appearance was different. My cat used to love her food and now she wants nothing to do with this food. She has also been having hot spots develop on her belly and has had extremely itchy skin to the point of bleeding. I even had to take her to the vet and she had to be put on steroids to calm down all the irritation. She has had allergies her whole life and never had hot spots. I started doing some research on the formula change and saw that a lot of the recent posts on Royal Canine’s website under the cat and dog HP dry food are now 1 star and complaining about the formula change, pets getting hot spots, losing weight, and now having health issues. If your pet is currently on this, I would be careful when the new bag arrives and if you just got a prescription, talk to your vet about the change and see if you can get a different brand of HP food.

No.
This food ruined my cat's coat & skin health and made him underweight. I only began using this food as a last resort against treatment-resistant feline chin acne. It seems to have cured the acne, but at what cost? He looked horrible. He was under ideal body condition, even on large servings of the food. His coat felt terrible and dry, and he was having dandruff, which he had never had before. I finally switched him off of this garbage and put him back on a high protein, animal content-based diet, and within 2 weeks his healthy weight and soft coat returned. I am honestly really, really peeved off about the effect this food had on my cat. Especially since he is a show cat, and the condition this food left him in severely impacted show results and basically caused me to waste a lot of money in addition to his international show ranking slipping... I would never recommend using this product unless your cat literally cannot stomach anything else.
